Today we'll delve into the power of this one verse, by uncovering what it means to be "sanctified by God's Truth" and discovering how as believers we can walk in this blessing from our messiah.
Before we get started it’s important to understand a few things. In the ancient Israelite culture, the “Word of God” was synonymous in many cases with the word “Truth”. The Messiah confirms this in the verse we are breaking down: “thy word is truth”.
The last thing we must do is get the Hebraic definitions of the words Sanctify and Truth.
“Sanctify" in Hebrew is the word “qadas," when used in this context it means: cleanse, make holy, being set apart, dedicated, and purify.
“Truth” in Hebrew is the word ”emet” when used in this context it means: of divine instruction
So now the question is, what divine instructions did the Most High give that is able to cleanse, make Holy or set a person apart?
For this answer, we turn to none other than the man after Gods own heart; King David. Who said, "Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth" (Psalm 119:142 KJV). He also proclaimed, "All thy commandments are truth" (Psalm 119:151 KJV).
King David laid out steps to clean your way:
“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: Teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared All the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, As much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, And have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.”
Psalm 119:9-16 KJV.
1. Take heed to Gods Word.
2. Seek God with your whole heart.
3. Don’t wonder from Gods commandments.
4. Hide Gods word in your heart, so you don’t sin against him.
5. Declare Gods judgments.
6. Rejoice in Gods testimonies.
7. Meditate on Gods precepts.
8. Have Respect for Gods ways.
9. Delight in Gods statutes.
10. Promise to never forget Gods word.
With this understanding, let’s reframe that segment of the Messiah's prayer in a way that the Israelites of that era would have comprehended it:
“Cleanse them with your divine instruction: your Torah is divine instruction”
Shalom.
